The MerMan Hoodie

My friend Alex is by far the biggest fan of MonkeySew. You may have seen one of the custom hoodies I made for him posted on this site. Alex is certainly a pleasure to work for. He is consistently positive and always supportive of my creative processes and the places they take me. He loves to have fun in his clothes and his life and encourages the same in the people he spends his time with.Every time he comes to me for a new piece, he gives me some ideas about what he would like, then gives me permission to run with it. He's and easy customer because he likes many colors and patterns and styles. I get to play around and I always feel relaxed when I am making custom peices for Alex.
He just had a birthday on July 5, and I miraculously busted out a truly fine piece of art, the Merman Hoodie, just in time for his Birthday party, which rocked by the way. There were at least 5 delicious cakes to eat that friends brought. Alex is well-loved by many. His mom, Kim was here visiting all the way from Arkansas and got to enjoy a wonderful party.
Last month Alex brought me a womens dress made of a stretchy shimmering blueish green velvet with a pattern of scales or waves. He requested a mermaid's jacket using this fabric. He is a Cancer, which is a water sign. I knew that this one would be special, a piece that expressed his unique watery energy. I waited a while to get to it cause I knew I needed to make this one real nice and I wanted to take the time to think about it. To feel what this thing wanted to become. We decided to make it out of 100% bamboo fleece, lined with the same. And the timing was perfect. When I did get around to making it happen, it came together so smoothly, one part to the next. Like liquid. I found a wonderful new stitch that makes the shape of a scalloped edge, like scales or waves. I used it on the majority of the jacket in baby blue and aqua green. I took deep pleasure in the creation of this garment, so excited to get to present it to Alex on his birthday.
I imagined him dressed in this costume, a delightful aquatic creature gracefully plunging the depths of his existence, learning to remember how to breathe under the water...
